Did you know? More than 2 million Canadians suffer from kidney failure or some kind of kidney-related diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure and kidney stones. Many patients with kidney disease end up requiring hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis. These treatments have improved significantly over the years but still negatively impact the quality of life of people all over the world. The number of Canadians on dialysis will double in the next 10 years. More than 3,000 Canadians are on a waiting list for a kidney transplant. Showdown in the Downtown raises money for research projects that will prevent people from developing kidney disease, improve accessibility to kidney transplantation and improve the well being of patients with kidney disease.
This year's Showdown in the Downtown was slightly different from their normal concert event, and was completely virtual. With an amazing performance from Our Lady Peace's Rain Maida and Steve Mazur, they were able to raise $287,000 of their $200,000 goal!
As well as supporting the London Health Sciences Foundation, the money raised from Showdown in the Downtown supports:
"Showdown in the Downtown is an entertaining and engaging event that helps London Health Sciences Foundation build health resources that meet the needs of our community. This is a local charity that has done tremendous grass roots work over the past several years to improve the lives and health of many in the community. The need today is greater than ever."
